photo from occupy seattle, found on facebook but i’m not sure of the original photographer.
this is an excellent example of WHAT NOT TO WRITE ON A PROTEST SIGN. rather than drawing attention to the widespread police oppression that is impacting both our movement and our urban communities, it creates opposing factions out of different targets of the penal system. I’m sorry, waspy guy, if you get arrested, but you will most likely get off with a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine. that crack dealer that you want to see arrested instead? that dealer is quite likely impoverished, uneducated, and a person of color; that dealer is the paragon of marginalized populations in america. you want that dealer to receive sentencing for a class a felony? you want to have that dealer thrown in jail and disenfranchised? you want that dealer to be henceforth denied welfare, public housing and other services? you want that dealer to be forever relegated to a subordinated caste of people who cannot obtain legitimate employment and will forever be trapped in a cycle of incarceration and criminal activity? I’m sorry, waspy guy, but your point is lost on me.
